movements

In the search for a movement to study more in depth; I came across one which whilst not a recognised movement- was interestingly the complete opposite of the popular movement of minimalism. Captivated by the fact that I'd never heard of this description of design before, I was intrigued to find out more of its origins and examples of work which could be included in this category.

Minimalism was a movements which emerged in the 60's, as there became a new disinterest in the expressive excess. in previous years. Art became less about emotional content, and leant more towards materiality of the works.  There was a desire to create 'sleek' designs, often incorporating geometric shapes and could be described as a Swiss Style.

Minimalism examples;

A clear style of art can be seen here, artistically, graphically and through sculpture and architecture. A key component uniting works inspiration could be that from the influence of bauhaus.

I wanted to illustrate that although this is seen as 'modern', there are much more recent design that can also be filled with the decadence and excess that were in the arts and crafts earlier movements.

The task here was to select resources from the library and research in to a given field, and then to present findings to a small group in the next weeks seminar lesson. Sharing knowledge like this broadens awareness across a wider variety of design areas.

Below is the book I used to reference.

BOOK- Maximalism: The Graphic Design of Decandence and Excess.
Charlotte, Rivers. 2004

This book facilitated study as its format combined text and images in a way which was helpful when approaching understanding the movement as a beginner. Each page focused on a different designer who had work of this style.

Reading through and summarising I was able to create a large mind map of artists of this style and the work in which they produced.
This is shown below.

Below are accompanying images that reflect the 'over the top' aesthetic.

Interpreting this style, I found the other works by 'Vault 49' e.g. Coca cola and nike.

But also with the early 2000 year being prevalent, it led me to think of album art from this time; as this is often an expressive piece of art at the time.
e.g. HedKandi above which a series of music albums.
