having an idea

Creativity is the first stage in having an idea. 
Defined as- the generation, development, transformation of idea that are both novel and useful for solving a problem.
An idea has to be both functional and useful as well as being "new" in the sense of different/unpredictable and that of a unique combination not seen before.


"The capacity for creative thought is the rue rather than the exception in human cognitive functioning."

While this 'double diamond' process for idea works well in the creative industries; it doesn't apply closely to our own process of idea development and research processes.
This is due to having the brief defined from the outset.

The ordering for studio project research is more like.....

Idea inspiration can come from any mediums; images, film, quotes, books etc. But during research 'big questions' have to be asked whilst investigating- these include;
  • hegemony
  • social control
  • desire
  • ideology
  • culture
  • subculture
  • gender
  • belief
  • inclusion
  • exclusion
  • direction
  • relationships
  • function
  • behaviour

It was first identified that designers had a "T" quality of knowledge in order to be effective. This meant that they had a broad understanding and broad skills set (horizontal line of T). This allowed for designers to see the 'big picture' but was often short as there wasn't much learning-on-the-job.  However what over road this was the long stem of specific knowledge which was acquired by education. It was thought of best to have a larger field of knowledge, than to be excellent in one specialised field.

After this was the new model made up of narrow vertical lines. This is that each person provides one element which they are best at and never needs to have a broad knowledge of all of them. The result looks like a barcode.
