After discussing my idea of a "sense of place" to the lecturers; they made is clear that peoples obssession with technology stems back much further than just the last couple of years. In particular they highlighted how the 'millennium bug' instilled the same irrational fear, as does losing your smart phone nowadays.
Millennium Bug
Y2K bug, also known as the year 2000 bug was a problem in the coding of computerised systems that was projected to create havoc in computers and computer networks around the world at the beginning of the year 2000.
Since the 1960's computers denoted years such as 1998 as 98. As a result when the new millennium arrived it was expected many computer clocks would see 00 and understand this to mean 1900.
In the UK the bug was blamed for more than 150 pregnant women getting incorrect tests for down syndrome.

This date is in reference to Tuesday 19th January 2038 at 3:14. 07pm. It is believed that on this date, systems that are running 32-bit systems could fail.
This theory was proved when Psy's Gangnam style video exceeded 2 billion view on Youtube.
