modelling and label use

Using Cinema 4d

Creating Box packaging. Adding a label to each face of the 3 dimensional shape.

Glass bottle creation. Using pre-set colour settings to create the right texture for the intended material. Shapes were also used to model out the lid of the bottle, this was to quicken the process of modelling.

Creating a can. The label, modelling the shape, and creating a texture the same as aluminium.

As shown previous, the environment was also adjusted here. Light and shadow provide a more realistic look to the digitally composed products.

My own modelling of an item on cinema 4d.

Modelling a cube with a glass texture.
Difficult came here with he texture reflecting and reflecting light. A smaller internal cube had to be used like with an ice cube in order to look as though it was made with thick glass.

Below shows the process of modelling the basics of a teacup.
During this process I learnt more about the lighting of a scene, and how lighting placed can have a nicer effect on a reflective object over that of global illumination.
This tends to take a long time to render, and it very bright and unnatural.

showreel

Here is showreel of some of the work created during my second year at university.
The video files were imported as quicktime files, as they were initially saved as. And then slides and transitions were used to blend one video in to another. I struggled to create continuity here as each project we had undertaken had a different theme and different colour scheme. It was difficult to find style and colours to use for the transitions which would tie the previous and next video together.

running a business

Different firms;

  • sole trader
  • partnership
  • limited partnership
  • limited liability
  • public limited liability
All of these firms need to manage costs
They have a need to develop a profit, thats the reason for the company
Profit is what is left over after trading
Costs are the expense necessary to do a job

10% is regarded as the average, reasonable amount of profit.
The higher the profit taken is more risky. Less profit means less risk.

tax man will look at your profits, and take proportion of it. It is not taxable on costs.
Tax examples
  • income tax
  • corporation tax
  • VAT
  • National Insurance
  • Capital Gains Tax
  • personal benefit taxes
  • business rates
Costs

Broken down in the distinctive group

-general costs (often noted as overhead)
e.g. heating, lighting, non project staff costs

-project costs, are specific
e.g. time on project
design costs for project
design costs for project (including staff)
bought in aspects

Make sure to apportion costs correctly.

Value

self employed designer: £35 per hr
student/ junior mac work: £18 per her

The value may rise if you merit it. Special jobs for big clients.

Perspective

E.g. earn £40,000
Thats 1143 per year
and then 22 hours a week.
at 35 per hour.

Considerations

think about the client demands
end-user demands

  • lighting, type; daylight, artificial, bright, dark
  • direction of light; side, front, back
  • time of year
  • UV aspects
  • impact on print type (inks)
  • screen size (glare)
  • location; media type, static, mobile, tv, web
  • speed of passing traffic, or footfall, static or dwell time
  • multiple sites
  • attention competition, is your ad besides others
  • guerrilla advertising
 Project issues;
  • size
  • requirements
  • time management, how many projects can be on the go at once
  • routine work or constantly new projects
Who provides a service to you?
  • photographers
  • illustrators
  • printers
  • studios
  • rendering farms
Research in to these, so that you know who is available to help undertake clients demands.

Business set up
  • geographical location
  • what you need
  • transport links
  • market you are aiming at
  • financing
Employers undertake all these elements, even if you are just an employee you need to be aware of this.

Behaviour

Professional behaviour is essential, being outgoing is fine, but must remain professional.

mental approaches between employers and designs may vary.
Divergent thinkers need to present work that fit in with convergent minds.
Creative solutions should be able to be justified.

geometric repeating patterns

In this process and production lesson we were focusing on making repeating geometric patterns on cinema 4d.
The use of 3D objects can be used and manipulated along with a camera to uncover the movements within an object.
This is exemplified below where a cylinder object is used. This is set with a "twist" so that the long cylindrical shape rotates as its depth (movement) is deepened. Along with this, sphere shapes were added in to the middle of this tube. And the idea was to be able to manipulate this so that the shapes would bounce around the centre (several shapes at once) and never move outside of the tube.

Materials were also added to both the cylinder and the sphere. These are evidenced in the screenshots. The materials for each are different however they both use the same editing of the "checkerboard" features to create stripes.

Project two was to create prints.

After leaning about how this plane could be used to create interesting diverse pattens, I went on to experiment with the turbulence of the lines and the colours which were added from the material panel.

My favourite two outcomes are shown below. I think they look quite animalistic in the roughness of the patterns. The colours also provide some link to camouflage with the khaki green. However this is modernised with a vivid mustard yellow.

Finally on particle emittance again, and incorporating text in to our designs.

While this piece allowed for a greater understanding of the possibilities with particle emittance as well as a second use of how to use type- the overall look is not something I wished to render out.
